CRIMINAL FACES | AS FICTIONAL FILM OPENING

Preesha Patel, Candidate Number: 1807

Film Production: Tom B 1807

Production Name: TenPin Productions

Film Opening Name: Criminal Faces

Genre: Romance / Crime / Drama

     Directing & Camerawork

Myself and Tom Bowling were both the directors for our fictional film opening “Criminal Faces.” We worked collaboratively as directors; from developing our narrative to directing the large cast of our production. We also used a variety of camera angles throughout the film opening using both the iPhone 11, iPad Pro and a Gimble multiple (mainly) wide angle shots in the film opening. We used a variety of equipment (cameras) during the production as many of the shots we aimed to achieve were shot at a variety of angles to creating representations of the characters.

Script Writer

I was responsible for writing the scripts for the voice overs and the script for the actors talking (dialogue) on screen. After peer focused feedback it was bought to our attention we should add voice overs to help establish the narrative and Gabe's. In the final cut, I wrote the script for Gabe's character that that shows the protagonists evil/sinister side.

     Lighting

In terms of lighting, I took responsibility for the indoor lighting. For example, when the main characters where walking to their lockers I took responsibility for adjusting the lights in the room to create a brighter light in the background and a harsher light in the foreground of the scene. For the outdoor shoots we used the natural lighting and if need be we would adjust the lighting in special affects/post production (if it was needed).

Graphics & Extra Information

I was responsible for creating the BBFC certificate, production company logos and more. We both created our TenPins Production Production Company logo, whilst Tom Bowling edited the animated video you see at the start of the fictional film opening. We both tried our best to split the responsibilities between the both of us in our small crew.

Editing / Music

Tom Bowling was responsible for the editing of the film production. From his GCSE Media Studies he was more familiar with using the editing platform Premiere Pro to edit our film opening, and elevate the art-house style film. He confirmed editing techniques he aimed to use with me, throughout the post-production process. Tom Bowling was also took responsibility for the relaxed, elegant music we used in our film opening.

REFINEMENTS

REFINEMENTS
We refined the overall narrative of our film opening. By conducting further research into the “good angel” and the “devil.” I learned about “Dexter and Sinister” and how this famous theory can be applied to the narrative of my film opening. Whereby, Gabe is the “Sinister” of our narrative - thus meaning, he is the one who could lead Arran down to a dangerous, dark and cynical pathway. And the “Dexter” being the known as the good. Where we see Holly (the love interest being introduced to our film opening). This “Dexter” was the main refinement to our narrative - as it is clear she is the character that could have a positive influence on Arran and his life.

REFLECTIONS

REFLECTIONS
Our first filming day was at school with a very large cast. From reflection we believed we worked successfully collaborating with the actors and our crew in order to create an impactful establishing scene. I believe our communication with the actors explaining in detail our vision and narrative, to help them get into ‘character’ helped the filming process. It allowed the actors to connect with the characters, and show this through their facial expressions. Especially the close up shot Arron as he looked intensely. On reflection this we believe that this was a very successful establishing shot.

EDITS

EDITS
On reflection we felt that once we had watched and reviewed the trailer it was difficult to clearly hear the dialogue of the character. As well as to distinguish the character’s voices on screen. Adding in voice overs. The diegetic (sound) dialogue we edited in for when the characters are interacting with each other on screen. In order to amplify the sound and make it clearer to the audience.

We used the voice messages app to record the dialogue of each character (diegetic sound). We allowed the actors to record there lines individually and recorded a few times until we were both happy with the dialogue. Once all the lines of each character were recorded, we edited this in to our film opening and took away the original dialogue on screen. This was a successful edit, as it allowed our audience to have a clearer understanding of the dialogue spoken by the characters.

CHANGES

CHANGES

We made changes to our story board. Our initial development we wanted to show the protagonist shop-lifting alcohol from a shop. However, due to Covid-19 Restrictions we decided to film somewhere that was safe when filming on an off-site location, where masks where necessary when filming the scene.

To make the scene as similar as it would to the protagonist robbing a shop, we made a change by having the protagonist sliding under a garage door putting the bottle of alcohol in his bag. Using the garage made it accessible and easier to film. As it proved to be a successful scene.

CONSTRUCTION: BBFC CERTIFICATE

 BBFC CERTIFICATE

When creating our BBFC Certificate I researched/looked for a template on the safari. Once I had found the right template, I edited it using Word Microsoft and Apple Editing, to edit / crop the image. When transferring the image into word I made some changes and added a black fill in the textbox with a white font to make it stand out. I changed the title and the description of the template. Once this was completed I saved this to files and we put this at the end of our film opening.

FILMING CRITICAL REFLECTION

Analysis of Each Scene / Reflection

Credits/Production Logo (Before Scene Starts)
  • In the credits at the end we had the idea of a Ten Pin bowling shot, where all the the pins in the shot with a smaller version of a bowling ally and the bowling pins. Tom and I both there the ball towards the pins (whilst filming at an angle) to have the pins fall down and then out production logo will be on screen (TenPin Productions).
Successes/Problems
  • At first we used a black back drop to roll the ball along the table/black back drop. However the challenge was that it caught the background of the overall frame. There were other objects etc.. that were interfering with the frame of the shot. So, we decided to use the green screen and my IPad Pro to film the clip. We set up the skittles agains the screen screen on the floor, and propped up the IPad in the position we wanted. This helped us complete the scene in the way we wanted to successfully.
Scene 1 - Establishing Shot

In this scene had all the extras against the wall with their backs facing the camera in the shot.

Scene 2 - Locker Scene, Tracking Shot (Part 1)
Successes/Problems
  • Due to the weather being dull and not sunny, the lighting was not the most bright. However, to solve this problem in post production we will increase the brightness and heighten the colours.
  • Another problem we had was the close up at the end of the scene. It was difficult to get only the main character in the shot and not have anyone one else in the frame. To solve this problem we directed the extras in this scene to move further away from the main character so Kevin (main character) is the only character in shot.
Successes/Problems
  • Tracking shot through the doors. We had some issues with lighting come in and out of the shot when walking through the scene. For example, when actors Holly and Arron walked underneath the windows the lighting became lighter than usual. However, like in the establishing shot we decided to decrease the brightness (a little) in this section.
  • The success of this scene was that in rehearsals the actors made it easy for as we casted two actors/people who are already comfortable with each other and working together.
Scene 3 - Locker Scene, Three Point Shot (Part 2)

Successes/Problems
  • Three shot scene. In this three shot scene we had difficulties with the directors being in the shot. We both tried to film in at different locations on set to try not be in the frame. In the end I ended up in the corner of the room shooting the three shot, and everyone was in frame.
  • We had script (and timing) issues with this shot. We ended changing the line with Kevin’s friend. We also let the actors improvise with their lines as well in this scene.

Scene 4 - Ending Robbery Scene (running out of the house) / Tracking Shot and Over the shoulder shot

Successes/Problems

CONSTRUCTION: PHOTOSHOP FILM POSTER

PHOTOSHOP FILM POSTER

CONSTRUCTION - FIRST DRAFT

Friday 12th March

This is the first draft of our film poster. However, there were many changes and alterations that we decided during this first editing/creating session. For example; for the picture we wanted to change it from just the male character to both the female and male main character together (in portrait instead of the image being landscape). We also wanted to add in the names of the actors at the top of the page (as credits) in a font that matches the genre of the film we are making.

These are the fonts I looked at from the website DaFont. I looked at different font types to try see which one would be best for our film. The bottom font almost looks like, finger prints in the letters. The criminal behaviour reflects on the gene of our film.

CCR2: DISTRIBUTING MY FILM

DISTRIBUTING MY FILM
NOTES
First Slide
When researching a major Hollywood film I noticed many strands that I could use to market my own independent film. I think with my budget I could use:
- Social Media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- Posters and market these on social media
- A film website to promote the film, the useful aspect of the website is that I can advertise where the screenings are
- A film postcard, links, he title/name, details etc..

Second Slide
- Information about taking it to festival, screenings at British festivals (London Film Festival).
- Tortoise in Love, is an example that was funded by the FBI
- I would like to get a screening on the BFI, and possibly get funding from the BFI to screen my film. This also meant that my film will have an after life, after being able get funded by the FBI.

Third Slide
- it does other things other than just tell them about the film on the website
- Sorry we missed you is an example, use screenshot poster on this slide. This is instead of a very big marketing campaign, it will tell the audience how to watch the film etc
- Hashtags can we used on my website will help. On the website it will include a trailer, where it is being screened etc..

Images on the Second Slide on Tortoise in Love
Images on Third Slide, example: of Sorry We Missed You screenshot
Images - screenshot of Bait digital poster and Festivals.

My Research on a Major Distribution Film:

I have understood that what film distribution is.

I learned from the FBU website from Mark Batey that i have to identify what gender my film is and what is USP is. The distributor will make a list of comparable  films.

Who - forth slide
What - fifth slide, defining selling point and hooks. Key themes.
When - sixth slide
How - seventh slide, how I would market my audience, what is the film , who is it for, ££ we can spend on marketing, what can we think the box office can achieve, influencers to promote the film etc...

Looking back at data, and do research on the comparable films. Demographic data, female/male etc..
Write down three films that are similar theme/genre/audience to my film.

One of the places we can get films from and choose to investigate is the FDA’s handbook

SEMIOTICS

 Semiotics

A detailed summary of what I learnt from Roland Barthes Media Theory on Semiotics

Semiotics Definition: The study of signs (in other words the way we make sense of everything around our).

What is a sign?: A symbol, a colour, a camera angle (basically everything around you).

Example: Here is a sign of the well know Apple Store. It is something we can infer meaning from, its called the signifier because it’s creating meaning. There are two types of meaning we get from this sign: the first is the denotation (the literal meaning), it is very recognisable to most people). However, it also has a connotation (the signified meaning), the associated meaning. So although it is literally an image of an apple or logo it might mean to some audiences high tech equipment/devices made in California, IPhones etc.. These are not the only connotations of this sign because it depends on your personal ideology (identity), your background, your culture so depending on all of these factors you might look at this image and think Chinese sweatshops you might look and think overpriced equipment.

The reason for this is because signs are what is known as polysemic, meaning many. So, we can read signs around us in many different ways

Looking at signs in moving image. Tales of Terror for Tokyo (as seen in the image above) is.a text not in English, so when we remove language (where meaning is mainly from), its how much the individual understands on other signs based in the text.

There are four main categories of signs that we look for in film:

Miss-en-scene:

This includes the set, the costume, the hair and the makeup. In this example extract it was seen that the corridor was very cramped (they chose to shoot the scene that instantly felt quite claustrophobic). In the scene the set was ver simple and plain (there was a lack of decoration and the walls were all white). Finally by selecting the character as the girl who looked sweet, innocent and cute, the feeling of terror (like when a child) would have been so much more than had it of been an adult trying to let someone in to the house.

Sound:

They’re might be sings in the form of music, sound effect the way people sound. The voice of the character behind the door sounds terrifying (even though most likely we don’t know what they’re saying), but the tone of the voice is creating meaning that we should be scared of this character. Having noice/music and removing it make the same impact on the audience (in terror and fear)

Camerawork:

We can look at the way the camera is framed through composition, the movement and how that might be creating meaning to the audience. Extreme wide angle shot were used in this example, to really emphasise just the amount of space they’re actually was and hw small the young girl looked in these small rooms.

Editing:

The use of sequencing, how one clip moves directly to another. For example in the extended scene were there was not any cutting for a long period of time, because this scene was so long it added to the held breath sensation we had with the lack of music.

Signs In Detail

Signs are selected by media producers to create a specific meaning. For example in a new magazine you could pick an this image (see below) to repent Plymouth or you could select this one. The decision the media producer makes will create a huge amount of meaning for the audience, that’s a huge amount of influence the media producer has of their audience form the selection of signs.

So what happens when a sign is used constantly in culture. Bartha’s argues that when this happens a sign becomes a myth and a myth is almost like an accepted dominant connotation of a sign.
